USOC Honors USA Softball Women’s National Team as the Team of the Month

Oklahoma City---The U.S. Olympic Committee announced the selection of the USA Softball Women’s National Team as its Team of the Month for July. This marks the first Team of the Month award for the USA Softball program this year.

The U.S. Women’s Softball Team went undefeated at the KFC World Cup, Canada Cup and the Pan American Games during the month of July. They outscored their opponents 164-4 during the three events and posted a team batting average of .426. The pitching staff’s ability to hold their opponents to a .115 batting average also helped carry the team on their way to three gold medals and a perfect 20-0 record.

The Under-21 U.S. Women’s Basketball World Championship Team finished in second for the team vote. The team’s margin of victory averaged 30 points throughout the duration of the FIBA U21 World Championships. They averaged 93 points-per-game on their way to gold while holding their opponents to only 63.

In third place for the team vote was beach volleyball duo Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh. May-Treanor (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Walsh (Santa Clara, Calif.) began the month of July by winning the SWATCH-FIVB International Tour on July 5-8 in Montreal. The pair only lost one set in the six matches they played during the event.

The duo then proceeded to win the SWATCH-FIVB Grand Slam the next weekend on July 12-14 in Berlin, Germany and the AVP Long Beach Open on July 19-21. May-Treanor and Walsh won six straight matches in Long Beach and never dropped a set throughout the duration of the event.

The team capped their month off with their third straight World Championships on July 24-28 in Gstaad, Switzerland.
