ASA and Liberty Mutual Join Forces

Oklahoma City, Okla. (June 3, 2008) -- The Amateur Softball Association of America (ASA) announced today it will become the lead softball partner to Liberty Mutual’s Responsible Sports™ program, an online community that celebrates and promotes responsible youth coaching and sports parenting. ASA experts, including USA Softball Head Coach Mike Candrea will contribute content to Responsible Sports, found at, featuring tips, tools and coursework for coaches, administrators and parents to create positive youth sports experiences in their communities.

“We are excited to partner with Liberty Mutual on the Responsible Sports program because it aligns perfectly with our mission to teach the fundamentals of softball, as well as create a positive and fun environment for the nation’s softball community,” said Ron Radigonda, Executive Director of the ASA. “Liberty Mutual’s Responsible Sports program is also a great platform to share ASA’s instructional DVDs and to provide information about our ACE online coaching certification program and upcoming coaching schools.”

Central to the Responsible Sports program are the Community Grants awarded to 20 youth sports organizations across the country. Organizations achieving the highest level of community participation in the online Responsible Coaching or Responsible Sport Parenting courses will earn a $2,500 grant to help defray the cost of coaching education, new equipment and field maintenance.

Also key to Responsible Sports are the Responsible Coaching Awards, presented to youth coaches around the country who best exemplify sportsmanship, integrity and overall concern for the development of our young athletes on and off the field. Parents, coaches and administrators can visit beginning in early June and continuing through the end of August to nominate a youth softball coach from their community. Award winners, selected through a process overseen by Positive Coaching Alliance and Liberty Mutual’s youth sports partners including the ASA, will each receive $250 to help fund his or her team or organization; a personalized Responsible Coaching trophy from Liberty Mutual; and special recognition on the Responsible Sports website, as well as on and

“I am honored to represent the ASA to support Liberty Mutual’s Responsible Sports program,” said Candrea, head coach of the gold medal winning USA Softball Women’s National Team. “We applaud Liberty Mutual for celebrating the important role youth softball coaches and parents play in developing young athletes into responsible, community-oriented citizens. ASA is proud to lend support this program and we will use our effective grassroots organization to promote communities’ participation.”

“Community embodiment of sportsmanship and personal responsibility is essential to provide an enriching youth sports environment,” said Lisa Paige, Liberty Mutual director of sponsorship and community marketing. “There are countless untold examples of responsible coaching and positive community support of their young athletes, and through the Liberty Mutual Responsible Sports program we will shine the light on many uplifting stories.”
