Alabama claims No.1 spot
2/10/2009

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. --- The Alabama Crimson Tide claimed the No. 1 spot in the first ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 poll of the 2009 season. Coming off a perfect 4-0 weekend, Alabama received 12 first-place votes and will open its home season this coming weekend in the Bama Bash. SEC rival Florida landed at No. 2 with eight first-place votes while Oklahoma moved to No. 3 after capturing the Hawaii Paradise Classic title.

The Pac-10 Conference now has six teams in the top ten as No. 7 Washington and No. 9 California were just two of three teams of the pre-season Top 25 to remain undefeated.

The Purdue Boilermakers enter the poll at No. 23 after a 2-1 record with a win against No. 4 UCLA while Kansas took the No. 25 spot with big wins over a then pre-season No. 7 Arizona and No. 11 Northwestern.

TOP TEN MATCH-UPS NEXT WEEK: Feb. 14 - No. 4 UCLA vs. No. 5 Michigan at the UNLV Louisville Slugger Desert Classic.
