USA Softball announces players chosen from Open Junior Women's tryouts in Altamonte Springs and Phoenix

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK--USA Softball announced today four additional players that will advance to the Junior Women's National Team Tryouts in Salem, Ore., in August. Two players were chosen from each of the two open tryouts held this past weekend in Altamonte Springs, Fla., and Phoenix, Ariz.

The players selected for the Junior Women's National Team camp are:

June 8, 2003 Portland, Oregon

June 14, 2003 Normal, Illinois

June 14, 2003 Waco, Texas

June 14, 2003 Santa Clara, California

Two players from each of the remaining open tryout sites will earn invitations to the Junior Women's National Team Tryout Camp in Salem.

From the tryout in Salem, USA Softball will select a roster of seventeen players to represent the USA in September at the ISF Junior Women's World Championship in Nanjing, China.

In 2002, the USA Junior Women's National Team captured the gold medal at the Pan American Softball Championship in Hermosillo, Mexico. By finishing in the top five of this championship, the USA earned a berth into the 2003 ISF Junior Women's World Championship.

The United States captured gold at the 1987 and 1995 ISF Junior Women's World Championships. In 1999, the last Junior Women's World Championship, the USA finished second behind Japan.

The Amateur Softball Association, founded in 1933, is the National Governing Body of Softball in the United States and a member of the United States Olympic Committee.

As the National Governing Body, the ASA is responsible for identifying, selecting and training male and female athletes to compete in World, Pan American and Olympic competitions. In addition to those duties, the ASA conducts the only recognized National Championship competitions in the United States.
