Oklahoma City, OK---Lauren Bauer (Santa Ana, CA) has been named as the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) female athlete of the month for the August. Bauer receives this prestigious honor in only her first season with the USA Softball Women's National Team.
Bauer received the honor because of her performance in the 2001 Pan Am Qualifier and the 2001 ASA Women's Major National Championship.
At the 2001 Pan Am Qualifier in Maracay, Venezuela, she continued to showcase her hitting prowess. Bauer, named to the All-Tournament Team, extended her hitting streak to a season-high 15 games during the Qualifier and led the squad in hits (14) and home runs (three) as she helped the U.S. to its third consecutive gold medal at the event. Versus Bermuda, Bauer connected for back-to-back home runs and added a third home run later in the day versus Colombia. She was also perfect in the field, posting a 1.000 fielding percentage.
After returning from Venezuela, Bauer led the Phoenix Storms to its second consecutive Amateur Softball Association (ASA) National Championship. For her efforts, she was named an ASA First Team All-American.
Later this month, Bauer will join 51 other athletes at the USA Softball Women's National Team Camp in Chula Vista, CA. At the conclusion of the camp, a core group of 22 players will be selected to return for the 2002 USA Softball National Team Camp in May. Also, a team will be selected to represent the USA at the 2002 South Pacific Classic in April.
