Coach/Player Communication

I had the pleasure many years ago to listen to Lou Holtz who at the time was the head football coach at Notre Dame. Coach Holtz is well known for his outstanding communication skills. He is able to teach, motivate, confront, congratulate, and console his players in a variety of ways that increase their learning and solidify his relationship with the team. Coach Holtz practices two secrets of effective communication: 1. He listens closely to his players. 2. He notices their individual differences.

The value of listening cannot be underestimated. Coaches who listen well set an example for their athletes and provide a foundation for a strong relationship. We can say the same for parents, teammates, and anyone that leads young people and provides a quality learning environment. Good listening is a skill that requires practice. It does not come naturally as we have all experienced during our career and especially during our marriage. When was the last time you went out to dinner with your spouse or friend and engaged in a conversation while thinking about something else and not hearing a word? We all have done that and a reminder that listening requires focus and practice.
