Here are some basic rules of the ASA Pick-Up Player Procedure.  This is a not a complete list verbatim per code.  For a completed listing, see ASA Code Article 503

ASA Pick-Up Player Form

Pick-Up Players

All criteria 1-5 must be met for the pick-up player procedure to be used.

1.  The Player must be picked-up from a team registered in the state of Iowa with Iowa ASA.  Players do not have to come from the same district as the team that is picking them up.  The player does not have to have played in championship play (districts, state...), but must be on the roster of an ASA registered team in Iowa for the current year (i.e league team...).

2.  The Player must be from a team that is no longer eligible in championship play -(does not qualify or chooses not to compete at the next level of play).  Once a player actually plays on a team, they are designated to that team for the 2006 season.  A player may appear on more than one roster, but it is the team the player first plays with in championship play that designates him/her to that roster.

3.  Player must come from the same division of play (i.e. Men's Slow Pitch, Men's Fast Pitch, Men's Masters Slow Pitch, Men's 16" Slow Pitch, Girl's Fast Pitch) and same or lower classification of play (i.e Class A.  B, C, D, 12 & Under B).

4.  The team must keep the roster at a total of 20 players including pick-up players.  If the team is over 20 players with pick-up players, the team must drop 1, 2 or 3 to remain at 20 players.

5.  The Official Pick-up Player Form must be used and approved and signed by the district commissioner in the district that the team plays in for adult play.  Players must be listed on the form, but can sign at the tournament before they play in the tournament.

6.  (Adult Pick-Up Players Only) After the tournament for which the pick-up player was listed, the pick-up player may be substituted for after any advancing tournaments, (i.e. player A is a pick-up player for a team in the State Tournament and cannot go on to the National Tournament.  A different pick-up player may be substituted for in his place for the next tournament), but a player may only be a pick-up player with one team per in a division of play.

Teams participating in National Qualifiers: (Adult Play)

1.  Once a team plays in championship play, those players that play with that team must play on that roster for the remainder of the year, whether the team is awarded a berth from the tournament or not.

2.  A team that accepts a National Tournament berth (pays the entry fee by the deadline set by Iowa ASA) from a National Qualifying Tournament they have a roster that is frozen and that team can only use pick-up players to add to their roster.

3.  A team that plays in a national qualifier that doesn't qualify may adjust their roster by adding players (up to 20) by the deadline of state tournament with approval of their district commissioner, however those players that played with that team in the National Qualifier are so designated to that roster for the remainder of the year.

Please note that in Men's Slow Pitch, each player is classified by what team they played with last in championship play.  If a Class C team picks up a Class D player, that player is now a Class C player in their next year and is only one of two players that can be added to Class D even if that player previously played with that Class D team the year prior.
